September 13, 2003 "Oakland Rebuilding", (formerly "Christmas in April") was my first event, and I have to say it was great!!! Thank you all for coming out and supporting the need to rebuild these houses. We had about 15 very hard working and energetic people from AACO show up. On this day, together with many other volunteers, we were able to help wash, paint, hammer, floor and cock our way to building someone a better place to live! It was fun and very educational. There was no experience necessary and we had plenty of guidance so that was not a problem at all. People who have never painted or washed anything in their lives, were able to try out their possibly hidden talents! Hammering, plumbing and flooring were other duties that some of us tried out and realized that we just use a lot of money paying other people to do something that we're capable of ourselves. Not only did we learn a whole bunch but we had great food too. After our hard work, we were able to enjoy great home cooking! Some local families made awesome chicken wings and burgers for all of us to enjoy and energize our spirits. So aside from giving a needy family a better place to live and learning about building houses, we also learned that inviting a lot of good friends over for a BBQ is a great idea to trick them into painting the house as well! |
